Vine

Psalm 139:1-24 NKJV

John 15:5 NKJV

The big thing about God (Father, Son, Spirit) is that they are ONE, interconnected, interwoven, and intertwined. Every fabric in universe is intimately connected. Even when humans invoke the free-will clause God stays connected to us.

That’s because God is ready and waiting for us to turn to Him. Every time we think of God, we are turning and God is there.

We are His children and there isn’t anything about us God doesn’t know, or can’t know.

Psalm 139:1-5 David wrote,

“O Lord, You have searched me and known me.

You know my sitting down and my rising up;

You understand my thought afar off.

You comprehend my path and my lying down,

And are acquainted with all my ways.

For there is not a word on my tongue,

But behold, O Lord, You know it altogether.

You have hedged me behind and before,

And laid Your hand upon me.”

It’s difficult for us to understand the magnitude of God’s greatness. According to David there isn’t anything God doesn’t know about us. Notice he wrote in verse 2 that He understands our thoughts. God not only knows us, He understands. That means that when we are having a really bad day, God understands.

That means we are never alone. We are never MISunderstood. God knows all of our ways AND He knows what we are going to say before we say it (verse 4). Even when we don’t realize it or know it, God’s hand is right there.

In Psalm 139:6 David let’s the reader know that he is overwhelmed by the knowledge that God really IS God and knows everything about us at all times.

“Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;

It is high, I cannot attain it.”

WE are connected.

In Psalm 139:7-12 David realizes that because the children of God ARE intertwined we cannot be forgotten:

“Where can I go from Your Spirit?

Or where can I flee from Your presence?

If I ascend into heaven, You are there;

If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.

If I take the wings of the morning,

And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,

Even there Your hand shall lead me,

And Your right hand shall hold me.

If I say, “Surely the darkness shall fall on me,”

Even the night shall be light about me;

Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You,

But the night shines as the day;

The darkness and the light are both alike to You.”

Even in the DARK, God sees us! So, if we are alone in the dark, we are NOT really alone!

In Psalm 139:13 we learn that we were individually formed in the womb. Each of us is custom-made and protected:

“For You formed my inward parts;

You covered me in my mother’s womb.”

The realization of the scope and power of God bring about an outpouring of PRAISE and WORSHIP in Psalm 139:14-16:

“I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;

Marvelous are Your works,

And that my soul knows very well.

My frame was not hidden from You,

When I was made in secret,

And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.

Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.

And in Your book they all were written,

The days fashioned for me,

When as yet there were none of them.”

Then Psalm 139:17-18 tells us that David realizes that this God who created the universe also created him, and SPEAKS to him. This Creator God individually speaks to David when he is awake and when he sleeps! Waking and sleeping:

“How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God!

How great is the sum of them!

If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand;

When I awake, I am still with You.”

Then, David recalls the men who chase after him…men who torment him and he tells God in Psalm 139:19-22:

“Oh, that You would slay the wicked, O God!

Depart from me, therefore, you blood thirsty men.

For they speak against You wickedly;

Your enemies take Your name in vain.

Do I not hate them, O Lord, who hate You?

And do I not loathe those who rise up against You?

I hate them with perfect hatred;

I count them my enemies.”

Finally, in Psalm 139:23-24, David tells God:

“Search me, O God, and know my heart;

Try me, and know my anxieties;

And see if there is any wicked way in me,

And lead me in the way everlasting.”

I have to admit that even though I’ve read Psalm 139 numerous times and memorized parts of what David wrote, breaking it down and realizing that David was speaking directly to God gives the Psalm new meaning and power.

There isn’t anything God doesn’t see and know. When we are afraid, God is with us! When we were put together, God saw us! God felt us…

We know that because in John 15:5 Jesus revealed, “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.”

Nothing is hidden from God because WE are connected to the Vine. We do not need to be alone. We need not be afraid.

God has it all covered!

Today’s Spiritual Practice is: Realize

You are connected to God. Let yourself feel your attachment to the vine.
