Be Slay

New Sayings

Matthew 5:14-16 ESV

You Slay (you slay or did a great job like you slayed the dragon)

I’ve known many believers in my life who were a light in their world…they did slay!

Matthew 5:14-16 tells us, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

There are two sisters I knew years ago who lived in the same Mississippi River town.

I met the elder sister first. She was vivacious and bold. She was hilarious. Even thinking of her now makes me smile.

She was active in many different kinds of clubs and she was bold about her special causes. She took an interest in one of my children and they became fast friends. She blessed him immensely.

She was an ardent believer in Jesus and she loved others the way Jesus loved her.

She did not hold back her good feelings.

She held on when she gave a hug and she was as generous as she was funny.

When I met her she was nearly 80 years old. I was in my early 40’s and she could nearly run circles around me.

Oh my, how she blessed me!

Shortly after I met her, I met her younger sister.

She was not a lot like her sister, but she was a gem in her own special way. When I met her I didn’t know she was the younger sister to the other woman I described.

She was a bit quieter than her older sister but she was ever so kind and thoughtful.

A short while after I met her I found out she’d lost a son in a work accident. Others told me that it really knocked the wind out of her when she lost her son.

I’ve been told by others that there’s nothing quite like burying a child.

After I met them I found out they were sisters.

I found out when they both showed up at church the same day. I wasn’t surprised they knew each other because the town we lived in was a mid-size place and both women had lived there all their lives. I did not suspect they were sisters.

The second woman was just a few years younger than her older sister.

That was nearly 25 years ago.

Since I met them they’ve both gone to be with Jesus but I still remember them fondly. I remember their bright light shining for Jesus.

I remember how they laughed.

I remember their acts of kindness.

I remember their love.

I will never forget that they made me feel like I was special and loved.

I do not ever remember hearing a cross word from either of them.

The thing that struck me about them most was how bold they were with their love. Through the years I’d been made to feel like I needed to tone down my personality and not laugh aloud so much. They made me feel accepted for who I was…

Today I laugh out loud because I knew them. They did slay!

I no longer try to ‘tone down’ my personality because they loved me for who I am. When we were together we laughed and carried on as much as we wanted to carry on.

Because they were the light of the world to me, they changed me. They helped me to boldly be who God created me to be.

I did not tell them how much they meant to me or how much knowing them changed me because it took years for me to realize it fully.

I’m not sad about that. I plan to look them up when I get to heaven so we can have a party. I fully expect it will be a party filled with lots of love and laughter!

I will be very glad to see them again!

They were a light to my world and I’ll be sure to tell them how they both changed me.

Spiritual Practice: Light

Think about who your light has been and what you’ll say when you see them again.
