Psalm 149:4, I Samuel 10:1, I Samuel 13:9, I Samuel 13:13-14 ESV
The account of King Saul and David is an integral part of the history of the people of Israel. We know from I Samuel 10:1 that Saul was unexpectedly anointed by the Prophet Samuel, “Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head and kissed him and said, “Has not the Lord anointed you to be prince over his people Israel? And you shall reign over the people of the Lord and you will save them from the hand of their surrounding enemies.”
At the time he was anointed Saul did not ever think he would be King of Israel. He was king because God chose him.
As Psalm 149:4 tells us, “For the Lord takes pleasure in his people; he adorns the humble with salvation.” God chose Saul.
But then during King Saul’s reign before King Saul’s battle with the Philistines Saul was instructed to wait for the Prophet Samuel to anoint the sacrifice before battle and the King disobeyed God. Instead of waiting he did the sacrifice himself, disobeying God (I Samuel 13:9).
Even though King Saul knew the Prophet Samuel was the one who was chosen to anoint the sacrifice before battle he chose to go ahead and perform the sacrifice without the Prophet Samuel. In doing so King Saul chose to ignore the command of the Lord. Saul was not humble before God.
When Samuel arrived he knew what had happened (because God revealed it to him). We are told in I Samuel 13:13-14, “Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the command of the Lord your God, with which he commanded you. For then the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought out a man after his own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.”
That was the day and the hour Saul was told he would be replaced as King.
He chose not to be humble before God.
He chose to forge his own path.
King Saul made the choice to be proud and take over. He chose not to be humble.
In the same way we choose.
Every day we choose to turn humbly to God or to take over our life without seeking God.
The choice is yours.
