Delight in the Lord

Psalm 1:1-2 ESV

Upon first reading (re-reading) Psalm 1:1-2 I was ever so stuck on the word “law”.

Psalm 1:1-2 says “Blessed is the man    who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,nor stands in the way of sinners,    nor sits in the seat of scoffers;

but his delight is in the law of the Lord,    and on his law he meditates day and night.”

I wasn’t sure why the word law jumped out at me, but it did.

What exactly did law mean in this section of scripture?

I looked up the Hebrew word…

I was certain it was To-rah or maybe Mitz-rah or maybe even Da-bar. Those are all words in Hebrew associated with WORD.

It turns out the Hebrew word was a form of Torah. The Torah. THE Word.

I read it again.

I see a man who is separated from the crowd. He stands alone.

He isn’t sad that he’s alone because he’s thinking. He’s thinking about a happy place where there is peace.

Then we see a group of people who are gathered. They are bickering and bartering. They are  yelling.

One who stands in the way of sinners.

A man who spends time with scoffers

…the man mentioned above who finds delight in the Law of the Lord.

The man meditates…

And he is at peace.
