Secret Weapon
Proverbs 3:24 MSG
I was really excited when I found this scripture! It was not a scripture I’d read before and it made me really really happy.
I’m not sure why, but I think the American culture missed the boat completely when it comes to resting.
As an undergraduate in Communication and Culture we studied a segment on how different cultures view various practices. One of those was resting.
As we studied and discussed the art of resting we agreed that the American culture was not healthy in that regard.
Proverbs 3:24 tells us, “You’ll take afternoon naps without a worry, you’ll enjoy a good night’s sleep.”
The statistics were frightening even years back when I was in college and I think they’d be even worse now.
In regard to understanding the importance of getting proper rest there were many cultures that practiced resting at work.
Now I worked for a large mortgage company for many years before I retired and I was in the executive communication area. We took telephone calls, had casework, and had to respond in writing to every request. We had two breaks and took a 30 minute lunch. If we had other personal items we had to deal with those had to be done during lunch. There was absolutely no time for resting.
As soon as lunch time was over we had to be at our desk and ready to go for the afternoon.
I remembered our discussions in college about how resting relaxed cultures lad fewer mistakes to deal with and their brain work better when they rested.
It’s no wonder wise King Solomon wrote about the importance of taking a nap and getting a good night’s sleep.
I try to practice that now that I am retired.
Something very unexpected happened when I started resting in the middle of the day. I found that I was able to get to sleep faster at night and when I woke up I had a wonderful time with God.
Now when I rest, every morning without fail when I wake up I have a strong sense of God’s presence. It is a huge blessing!
Even if it’s only on weekends you might want to give it a try!
