While the words of prophecy God gave to Amos were dire and there wasn’t a lot of good news, there were words of hope.

I don’t know about you but when I hear about the bad, the really bad, and the devastatingly bad I start feeling the weight of it.

Even though time (and Israel) is on the other side of these words of prophesy, the thought of the bad, the really bad, and the devastatingly bad news is difficult to process.

The good news…the really good news is that Amos was given words of hope for Israel. Those words of hope would have given them something to hold onto.

In Amos 9:11-12, we are told:

“In that day I will raise up    the booth of David that is fallenand repair its breaches,    and raise up its ruins    and rebuild it as in the days of old,

that they may possess the remnant of Edom    and all the nations who are called by my name,”    declares the Lord who does this.”

In reality we know from history that before the time of Amos the northern kingdom of Israel came to a point where they did not support the house of David. The key element in Amos 9:11-22 is that the prophet foretold one would come from the House and lineage of David who would:

Raise up the booth of David:

Jesus was from the line of David. We learn from Matthew 1:6-16, “and Jesse the father of David. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, and Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asaph, and Asaph the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah, and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos,[c] and Amos the father of Josiah, and Josiah the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon.

And after the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah was the father of Shealtiel,[d] and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ.”

Repair its breaches and Raise up its ruins:

In Jeremiah 30:3 he foretold, “For behold, days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will restore the fortunes of my people, Israel and Judah, says the Lord, and I will bring them back to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall take possession of it.”

2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

Rebuild it as in days of old:

Following the return from exile in Babylon the Jews were able to begin rebuilding (538 B.C.) when the Persian King Cyrus allowed the Jews to return to their homeland.

However the rebuilding of the Temple is complex because it was built/rebuilt/and expanded three times.

The first building was under King Solomon around 1000 B.C. It was destroyed by the Babylonians in 587/586 B.C.

The second Temple was rebuilt 516/515 B.C. (See Old Testament books Ezra and Nehemiah regarding the rebuilding).

The third temple (called an expansion) was built by Herod around 19 A.D. and was destroyed by the Romans in 70 A.D.

They will possess the remnant of Edom:

Amos’ words referred to the foundation laid that salvation was for everyone. There are many examples but a few are when Jesus made that clear in Luke 7 when He forgave a sinful woman, in Luke 17 when He healed ten lepers, when he healed Bartimaeus in Mark 10:46-52, and when He went to Zacchaeus’ house in Luke 19:1-10.

And all the nations who are called by the name of God are mentioned many times including in:

Psalm 22:27, “All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations shall worship before you.”

Psalm 33:8, “Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him!”

Acts 17:26-28, “And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, for “‘In him we live and move and have our being’; as even some of your own poets have said, “‘For we are indeed his offspring.’

The repair and rebuilding is a lot to take in but at least now we can see God’s plan. They only knew the promise of a plan.

Spiritual Practice: Reflect

Think what it would have been like in Israel during the time of Amos. What would you have thought?
