Psalm 25:9
I Samuel 15:10-12 and I Samuel 15:2-3 MSG
I John 2:16 ESV
Scripture includes a great deal about humility through love. Humility before God is important.
Psalm 25:9 says,“He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way.”
Based on God’s word to David humility is essential. David knew King Saul as a boy. King Saul had watched David as he served the king. But then one day David killed the giant Goliath with a stone. Word about David’s victory spread throughout Israel and he became very popular. King Saul was NOT happy about that.
So, let’s back up…we know that King Saul was born around 1050 B.C.E. He reigned as King of Israel from around 1030 B.C.E. to 1010 B.C.E. We know from I Samuel 15 that King Saul came to a point in his reign where he was not humble before God. Saul quit listening.
In I Samuel 15:10-12 we read that following a battle, “God spoke to Samuel: “I’m sorry I ever made Saul king. He’s turned his back on me. He refuses to do what I tell him.” Samuel was angry when he heard this. He prayed his anger and disappointment all through the night. He got up early in the morning to confront Saul but was told, “Saul’s gone. He went to Carmel to set up a victory monument in his own honor, and then was headed for Gilgal.”
Saul was so consumed with pride through the victory over Amalek that he did not obey God. The instructions to Saul from God before the battle before were (I Samuel 15:2-3), “‘I’m about to get even with Amalek for ambushing Israel when Israel came up out of Egypt. Here’s what you are to do: Go to war against Amalek. Put everything connected with Amalek under a holy ban. And no exceptions! This is to be total destruction—men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys—the works.’”
Saul was specifically told not to keep the spoils of war, but Saul was not humble before God and he did not obey God. That is why God knew Saul had turned away from God. Saul’s pride was his downfall. In the end, David became the new King over Israel because he listened to God.
Under the new covenant we are told in I John 2:16, “For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.”
God desires a humble heart.
Ultimately scripture tells us, “Pride goes before the fall.” (Proverbs 16:18)
God desires a humble heart…seek humility!
