The Dream

 Series Daniel

Chapter 2

Daniel 2:3-13 ESV

Daniel 2:46-49 ESV

Daniel 2:36-45 (Daniel Interprets the Dream)

King Nebuchadnezzer really was one smart man!

But one day he had a dream and he had no idea what it meant.

So, he called together all of the magicians and sorcerers and pretty much anybody who might be able to tell him what the dream meant. They all came ready to reveal the meaning of the dream.

But, here’s the catch…he wouldn’t tell them what the dream was.

All of the magicians and sorcerers and other types urged the King to tell them the dream so they could reveal the meaning,

The King refused which turned out to be a genius move. Still they pressed on and begged the King to reveal the dream.

Uhhh…that’s a no.

So they stood around the room looking at each other.

In Daniel 2:3-13, “the king said to them, “I had a dream, and my spirit is troubled to know the dream.” Then the Chaldeans said to the king in Aramaic, “O king, live forever! Tell your servants the dream, and we will show the interpretation.” The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, “The word from me is firm: if you do not make known to me the dream and its interpretation, you shall be torn limb from limb, and your houses shall be laid in ruins. But if you show the dream and its interpretation, you shall receive from me gifts and rewards and great honor. Therefore show me the dream and its interpretation.” They answered a second time and said, “Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will show its interpretation.” The king answered and said, “I know with certainty that you are trying to gain time, because you see that the word from me is firm— if you do not make the dream known to me, there is but one sentence for you. You have agreed to speak lying and corrupt words before me till the times change. Therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that you can show me its interpretation.” The Chaldeans answered the king and said, “There is not a man on earth who can meet the king's demand, for no great and powerful king has asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter or Chaldean. The thing that the king asks is difficult, and no one can show it to the king except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.” Because of this the king was angry and very furious, and commanded that all the wise men of Babylon be destroyed. So the decree went out, and the wise men were about to be killed; and they sought Daniel and his companions, to kill them.”

Once Daniel found out why they sought him out to kill him, he contacted his three friends (Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego) and they prayed asking God to reveal the meaning of the dream.

Daniel did not ask King Nebuchadnezzer to tell him the dream.

Daniel knew God, THE God knew about King’s dream.

That night Daniel had a dream and God made everything clear to Daniel. The next day Daniel  went before the King and told him what God revealed about the meaning of the dream.

In Daniel 2:46-49 we are told, “Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face and paid homage to Daniel, and commanded that an offering and incense be offered up to him. The king answered and said to Daniel, “Truly, your God is God of gods and Lord of kings, and a revealer of mysteries, for you have been able to reveal this mystery.”  Then the king gave Daniel high honors and many great gifts, and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon and chief prefect over all the wise men of Babylon. Daniel made a request of the king, and he appointed Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego over the affairs of the province of Babylon. But Daniel remained at the king's court.”

Scripture doesn’t say but I’m pretty sure all of the magicians and sorcerers were scratching their heads wondering how Daniel was able to tell King Nebuchadnezzer what the dream meant when he didn’t know the dream.

That just doesn’t make sense.

No, it doesn’t make sense but here’s the deal about God and Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

Daniel knew when they prayed God would not fail him.

He knew God would reveal truth to him because they asked God to reveal truth.

Without wavering, Daniel knew God would not fail him.

Let’s look at that today.

When I was fourteen years old and the Holy Spirit came on me for the first time at a Billy Graham Crusade I wasn’t sure what happened. All I knew was that a hurricane like wind swept through my soul. I knew my life would never be the same again.

After that night I started having dreams and visions and God revealed things to me I didn’t know before. Every time I had a dream and I knew it was a dream from God it came true after I had the dream.

I even knew when I had a dream that wasn’t from God it wasn’t from God. Only some of my dreams are from God.

I don’t know how I know, but I know and what I know is that God is God and I’m not God.

Fifty six years later I’m as certain as I was when I was fourteen. When I have a dream that is from God it comes true later. Every time without fail.

Spiritual Practice: How does God speak to you?

If you’re not sure, ask God to reveal it to you.
