In all of our lives God is the only one who knows the way ahead. We can plan and prepare, but it’s been my experience that oftentimes my plans go by the wayside.

I am not God.

God alone knows the best way.

There have been times in my life when I was absolutely certain that I knew the truth about what happened to me, only to find out later that I only knew 90% about what happened. I’ve learned the hard way that only God knows the whole truth.

I am not God.

Only God knows everything.

I have participated in seeing four children within moments after they breathed their first breath. They grew in my womb from a microscopic organism to a baby. But I know I did not give them life. I only gave them a housing place in my womb.

I am not God.

Only God can breathe life into a human.

Yet, Jesus was human. he looked human. He was born a Hebrew baby and grew up in Nazareth. In His farewell message to His disciples just prior to the Last Supper, Jesus described himself as “the way, the truth, and the life” in John 14:6.

The disciples that day who heard Jesus’ declaration that He IS the Way, the Truth, and the Life would have, or should have known that no man had ever made such a statement.

In John 14:6, John the disciple recorded Jesus’ words, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

Notice that Jesus didn’t say He knew the way, He said He WAS the way.

He didn’t declare He knew the TRUTH. He said He WAS Truth.

He didn’t say He offered life. He said He WAS life.

There was a vast difference between saying he was aware and He WAS.

Jesus’ follow up statement that NO ONE can go to the Father except by Jesus was unheard of up to that time. No priest or prophet had made any statement similar throughout Hebrew history.

God knows the WAY.

Deuteronomy 1:30, “The Lord your God, who goes before you, He will fight for you, according to all He did for you in Egypt before your eyes.”

The Prophet wrote in Isaiah 52:12, “For you shall not go out with haste, nor go by flight;

For the Lord will go before you, and the God of Israel will be your rear guard.”

Ask God to show you the way.

God IS Truth.

We read in I Kings 17:24, “Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now by this I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in your mouth is the truth.”

She recognized God’s word in Elijah.

Ask God to give you His truth.

God gives Life.

We know from in Nehemiah 9:6:

“You alone are the Lord;

You have made heaven,

The heaven of heavens, with all their host,

The earth and everything on it,

The seas and all that is in them,

And You preserve them all.

The host of heaven worships You.”

God gives life to us.

In Psalm 16:11 David wrote, “You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”

The terms for ‘the way, the truth, and the life’ had been and were used elsewhere in the Old Testament in reference to God the Father. The disciples would have heard those scriptures when they went to Temple growing up.

In the Gospel of John in Chapter 1:3-4 he wrote, “All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.”

Jesus, God was light and life.

Let God reveal life to you.

When I think about what lies ahead for me, I am old enough to ‘hold my thoughts lightly’. I’ve lived long enough to realize the way forward can change in an instant.

I now know that truth is relative and tomorrow may shed light on information I know nothing about today.

I’ve learned that life is precious and fleeting. I can only count on God to hold onto all of my tomorrows.

I find great comfort in knowing that God does know my way because He IS the way. God knows my whole truth because He IS truth. And, God who IS life holds all life in His hands.

I am more grateful for that knowledge than I can effectively communicate. It is God who holds onto ME. I don’t have to concern myself with anything else.

Today’s Spiritual Practice is: Way, Truth, Life

Embrace who God IS.
